What are the economic conditions like in Turkey as an export country in times of a currency crisis? Does it currently make sense for domestic companies to invest in Turkey and how do experts assess the market development on the Bosporus? Transport and mobility are not only two central pillars of NUN Overland’s business, but also important factors when it comes to climate protection. That’s why we are also a project partner of the “klimaaktiv mobil” initiative. These and similar questions were the focus of the “Business Delegate Talk Day” on November 20.

Georg Karabaczek, the Austrian business delegate in Turkey, was a real expert to answer the questions of the regional business people. Karabaczek visited the southern Styrian companies Vinoble Cosmetics, Holler Tore GmbH and NUN Overland together with Marie Peinsith from the Internationalization Center Styria (ICS) and the regional head of the Styrian Chamber of Commerce, Josef Majcan.

Turkey’s economic engine is humming

While the first two are currently preparing to enter the Turkish market, the forwarding company NUN Overland has already had a highly successful presence on the Turkish market for three decades. And Karabaczek left no doubt that cooperation with Turkish partners will continue to be good for business in the future: “There are many young, well-trained workers, a solid budget and a constantly growing population,” said the expert, who also referred to impressive figures: bilateral foreign trade between Turkey and Austria amounts to around 3.8 billion euros per year. 200 Austrian companies have a branch in Turkey, 20 of which produce locally.

Good time to expand

In the first half of 2018, Austria recorded a 7% increase in exports to Turkey. Even though the Turkish market slumped in the second half of the year, Karabaczek believes that now is the ideal time to set up production facilities in Turkey and export there. “The large number of Turkish skilled workers and the geostrategic importance as a hub between Europe, Asia and the Middle East offer excellent economic opportunities for Austrian companies.”

Domestic support for market entrants

NUN Overland can only agree with this assessment. We have maintained good business contacts in Turkey for 30 years. Even the economic crisis has not changed this. On the contrary: despite all the adversity, there are many up-and-coming industrial areas in Turkey where Austrian companies can gain a foothold. How? Numerous support programs from ICS and the WKO as well as the know-how of NUN Overland will help you.
